Kimberly Brown, 49, of Bridgeport, who pleaded guilty in July 2018, to larceny and forgery, was sentenced to five years, suspended after she serves one year in prison, followed by five years’ probation.
State police launched an investigation in August 2017, after the Bridgeport office's manager discovered a large monetary discrepancy, state police said.
The DMV notified the Office of the Connecticut State's Attorney, saying that it suspected an employee of misconduct at the office. An investigation was launched, and over the course of a several-month-long investigation, detectives identified Brown as a suspect.
Police said that Brown, who worked as a motor vehicle examiner specialist, had exploited a loophole involved with registering of cars. Through her scheme, she was able to steal $79,907.59 over a two-year period, according to police.
When interviewed by police, Brown told them that she was depressed and stressed out had acted out of desperation.
She has since repaid $10,000 and is required under her sentencing agreement to continue repaying the money following her prison term.
